How You Can Make Your Hair Stylists Job Easier

Written by

At one point or another, you have probably been guilty of rolling your eyes at at your hair stylist, or telling them a little white lie. Given they’re dealing with your most prized possession, your hair, hair stylists may take this particularly badly.

It is sometimes hard for a hairdresser to be talented, tactful, efficient, and up to date on the latest trends and techniques. We have to be able to create wearable art. Ever wonder how you can make your hair stylists job easier and walk out with the best possible results. With that in mind, we came up with our top five things you can do and what we really want our clients to know.

1. Always Tell the Truth About Your Home Experiments.  No one’s saying you have to treat your hairdresser like a priest who’s confessing you, but some of those fibs we tell can be dangerous. When it comes to at home hair color, honesty is a matter of safety. When trying to lighten hair that has been packet dyed repeatedly the powder lightener reacts with the ingredients of the previous color. All hairdressers fear this. That’s why your hairdresser is asking you if you’ve used an at home packet dye. Not because they want to shame you, but because they’d rather not have you burst into flames on the salon floor.

2. Always Try to be Courteous and Considerate. If you’re running late or can’t make it, it’s basic manners to let your hairdresser know, so they can rearrange their day accordingly. A cancelled appointment costs them money, while a late client can spoil things for everyone who runs on time. But most of all, your hairdresser would like you to stop talking on your phone during the appointment. Think about what getting a nice, even hair cut involves. You’re not even meant to cross your legs because it could make your cut uneven. Then think about what putting your phone to your ear involves. These two things don’t really go together, do they?

3. Always Stay Faithful and True. You use your usual hairdresser, then decide you need a change. You go to someone new. You don’t like your hair. You go back to the original. You decide you need a change. Repeat the cycle. It is to your advantage to stick with the person that you trust the most and know your hair the best and have them consult you on the new look. After all, your stylist loves to be creative so, let them.

4. Always Use the Products We Recommend. Any stylist will tell you, products will make or break a hairstyle. Your stylist isn’t just trying to sell you something, they legitimately want you to like your hair. The products that they use in the salon to make your hair look fabulous are what is needed to reproduce that same look at home. Have you ever said, “I can never get my hair to look like my stylist does?” Well, it may be that you are not using the right products.

5. Always Keep Your Expectations Realistic. Like most people, a specific hairstyle you are trying to achieve simply will not work with your hair type. If you give 10 stylists a paper and pencil and describe a hair style and ask all 10 stylist to draw what they think you want, no two drawings will be the same or probably close to what is in your head. If you have an exact idea of what you want your hair to look like, bring a picture. You can even bring in multiple pictures and say ‘these bangs,’ and ‘these layers,’ but if possible, choose photos of people whose hair is a similar texture as yours. Realistic expectations with your style will be much easier for us to recreate on you.
