Should I Cut My Bangs?

Written by

We really want to make sure that you know what you are getting into when you finally take the plunge to cut bangs. Even though they are super fun and easy, bangs definitely require some adjustments. Bangs can make you look younger in your 30’s and 40’s and they can make you look more mature in your teens and 20’s. But they are never something you should do on a whim.

Fall and Spring are great times of the year for new and innovative fashion. It is time to take a new outlook on family and friends and time to go through your makeup case and wardrobe to weed out the not so hot from the trendy. And inevitably, you find yourself considering a major hair change. Is this the year you finally cut it all off or maybe color it bright red? Then you remember that bangs are classic and trendy this year. But before you make that long term commitment you need to absolutely make sure you are ready for it. Here are some things to consider when you find yourself asking the question, should I cut my bangs?

  • If you have had bangs in the past, did you like them? NEVER cut your bangs if the answer to this question is, “I hated them.” If you liked bangs before, you will probably like them again. If you hated bangs before, you will most likely repeat the feeling.
  • Why did you end up growing your bangs out? If the answer is for a change of pace or a particular look then you are golden.
  • Will bangs still work with your hair type? The texture of your hair sometimes changes since the last time you had bangs, which may cause you to shy away from cutting bangs on finer or thinner hair. If your texture has remained the same then you should be able to pull it off once again.
  • Do you have the time and patience to wait? Bangs can be a rough transition. You can sometimes feel like your bangs are framing your face too much and this transition can effect the way you feel about them. And remember if you choose to grow them out it takes time.
  • Are you okay with the maintenance? Your hair grows at a set rate of about half an inch per month, and your bangs will need to be regularly trimmed.  Salon F offers complimentary bang trims in between your hair cuts, to avoid feeling the need to trim them yourself. Do NOT trim your own bangs. You may not be able to make them look as good as they should.

At this point, you hopefully know whether you actually want bangs, but if you still don’t know, ask your hairdresser and your best friend. Because changing up your look can definitely be a life changing experience and you need people that will tell you the brutally honest truth. After all, there is only one way to find out if bangs will really work for you. Just be comforted in the knowledge that hair does grow out eventually, so you should not be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and try something new.
